Letter to Prospective Students in Biology
Dear Prospective Student:
"Call to Me, and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know." Jeremiah 33:3
It is a pleasure for me to write and encourage you to consider Belhaven University for your academic career. Many of you are seriously seeking God's will for your life with respect to a career in some area of biology or the health sciences. We as a college and as a department are interested in helping you with that decision.
The purpose of a biology major at Belhaven University is to provide students with:
I. A broad background including both academic subject material, laboratory experience, and research or internship experience.
2. Specific courses and the advising necessary for pre-professional or graduate programs.
The professors within the department believe that there are distinct advantages in a small liberal arts Christian college. These strengths include: small class size (10 to 20 students in upper level classes), interaction between faculty and students both in and out of the classroom, faculty assistance in the advising program, a strong co-operative undergraduate research program with the University of Mississippi Medical School numerous internships, a strong seminar and outside speaker program, and a strong record of acceptances at local and regional professional and graduate schools.
I hope that You will read through the description of our program, the course listings and the many opportunities available to students within the Biology Department at Belhaven University. Do not hesitate to call or write me if I can be of assistance.
Thank you very much,
In HIS Service,
Alfred P. Chestnut. Ph.D.
Professor of Biology and Chair of the Natural Science Division and Chair of the Biology Department
