Eligibility for admission will be determined when the application, application fee, an academic reference, academic records, TOEFL score, affidavit of support, and proof of medical insurance have been received by the College. It is important to submit all documents early in order to complete the admission process in sufficient time to obtain a visa for travel to Belhaven.

FRESHMAN ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma from secondary school or secondary leaving examination with a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale from high school.
  • Diploma should list date of graduation and class rank.

TRANSFER

  • Transfer students are required to have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale from prior college/university work.
  • Official college transcripts from all previous colleges attended must be submitted.

Scores below these minimums must be considered by the Admission Committee for acceptance.

Admission Tests For International Students

To be admitted to your desired program of study, all international students must submit an acceptable score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL).

Scores must be no more than two years old and must be verifiable. Completion of intensive English training or English composition courses at a U.S. college does not automatically waive the test requirement.

Only students who are citizens of Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, England, Guyana, Ireland, and New Zealand are automatically exempt from this requirement. Citizens of Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa, and Swaziland are only exempt if English is listed as the first language on the senior certificate.

Students who have not taken the TOEFL, the IELTS, or the CAEL may be admitted to our English as a Second Language program (ESL).

Types of Admission Tests

The minimum score required for entering Belhaven University degree programs is 525 paper-based or 71 iBT. Students who score less than a 525/71 or who have no score will be required to take English as a Second Language (ESL) during their first year they are enrolled at Belhaven. Students who score a 525 or 71 iBT or higher will not be required to take ESL, but a writing and grammar course will be recommended.

TOEFL is administrated in the U.S. six times a year, and in some locations twelve times a year by Educational Testing Services. Information can also be obtained overseas at the United States Educational Foundation offices in New Delhi, India; Institute of International Education in Hong Kong; the American Korean Foundation offices in Seoul, Korea; the Language Center in Taipei, Taiwan; and many U.S. embassies and consulates.

The minimum score required on the IELTS to enter a degree program at Belhaven is a 6. Students who score less than a six or who have no score at all, will be required to take English as a Second Language (ESL) their first year they are enrolled in Belhaven. Students who score a 6 or above will not be required to take ESL, but a writing and grammar course will be recommended.

The minimum score required on the CAEL to enter a degree program at Belhaven is a 70. Students who score less than a 60 or who have no score at all, will be required to take English as a Second Language (ESL) their first year they are enrolled in Belhaven. Students who score between a 60-70 will be required additional testing, to determine what level of courses may be needed.

English speaking students may also choose to take one of the tests below. The minimum score required for admission on the SAT is a 960 combined critical reading and math score with a minimum critical reading score of 440. The minimum score required for admission on the ACT is a composite of 18 with a minimum score in English of an 18 and a minimum Reading score of 21. Students who do not meet these minimum score requirements may be reviewed by the admission committee.
