Welcome Week - New Student Orientation

Welcome Week will be one of the most exciting and fast-paced times of your college life.  Not only will you meet many of the students, faculty and staff who make up the Belhaven family, but you will also learn your way around campus and begin to make Belhaven University your home. The staff in the Office of Student Leadership is responsible for the planning and implementation of Welcome Week.  Feel free to contact our office if you have questions.  We look forward to seeing you on August 17!

Welcome Week Check-In
Saturday, August 17
9:00am - 5:00pm, Student Center

You will receive a Welcome Week Guide at Welcome Week Check-In on Saturday, August 17 (Student Center Commons, 9:00am- 5:00 pm).  The Welcome Week Guide will include details and specific information concerning the Welcome Week schedule, events, staff introductions and other pertinent information.

All new students should stop by Welcome Week Check-In to receive essential information, including a BU bag, nametag, and a Belhaven University t-shirt.  Students will be given instructions for later in the week at this time as well.  Parents will also receive a Parent Packet during Check-In.

Residence Hall Check-In (closes at 5:00pm)
Student Center Commons
All resident students will begin the check-in process by completing necessary forms before moving into their Residence Halls.  Students will receive clearance to receive their room keys and may begin moving in once this is completed.  A Belhaven ID card is required for entry into the Residence Halls beginning this evening.  Students arriving after 5:00pm may check-in at the Residence Halls and will have the opportunity to check in for Welcome Week prior to the Welcome Gathering from 6:30pm-7:00pm (Center for the Arts, Concert Hall Lobby).

Security Office
Students should stop by the Security office to complete forms to obtain a student ID card and car decal.  In order to register a vehicle, students must provide their license plate number, valid driver’s license and student ID number.

Grab lunch wherever you choose.  The Dining Commons is available.  The resident student meal plan begins with this meal.  Meals are $6.50 per person for non-residents.

All new students (freshmen and transfers) and parents will meet together for an introduction to Belhaven and Welcome Week Kick-Off!  Everyone will hear from Dr. Roger Parrott, President of Belhaven University as well as other key administrators.  Parents and students will transition to the following places and will meet back together at the Coffeehouse & Dessert:

The role that parents play in the lives of their student is valuable and essential to the success of each student!  During this session parents will receive tips on how to make the transition to becoming a college student parent as smooth as possible.  Parents will be welcomed to the Belhaven University family and have a time to ask questions regarding college life.  Parents will also hear from key administrators in the areas of Student Success, Student Life, Student Leadership and Mr. Gary Maze, speaking on, “Parents…welcome to college!”  This session includes information not presented during summer pre-registration.

At this first student-only event, students will meet their Welcome Week Peer Leaders and Peer Group and learn essential details for the next few days!

The Shoe Bird Café will be open for students and parents to make connections with other families.  Resources will be available to help parents stay connected beyond orientation.

Various Campus Locations – Soccer Bowl, Football Practice Field, Rugg Arena, Auxiliary Gym, Student Center Commons, and McLeod Field (Riverside Drive)
The afternoon is set aside to have some fun at your leisure – play basketball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, flag football, wiffle ball or you can play kiddie pool kickball, compete with others in a variety of board games and visit with friends!  Indoor and outdoor activities are available!

7:30pm 321 Improv
Concert Hall – Center for the Arts
321 Improv Comedy will bring tears to your eyes, a pain to your side and they’ll make your face ache with laughter! An evening with 321 Improv is unlike any you’ve been a part of before. It is a unique interactive comedy experience. Each show, the three guys in 321 Improv instantly turn audience suggestions into hilarious scenes. No two shows are the same!

Students that attended B & U Day (pre-registration in June for freshmen and July for transfers) may use this time to make any changes to their Fall 2013 schedule.  Those that did not attend B & U Day will need to first attend the “Get to know BU!” session before academic advising and registration.
8:30am Dance Students ONLY – Faculty Advisor Meeting /Meet Your Major

All students who plan to take a dance course should attend this session to meet with dance faculty advisors and Peer Leaders who are in the dance program.  This will give students and advisors a chance to visit informally, have an opportunity to ask questions and find out pertinent information.  Dance students will have placement class from 9:00am-12:00pm.  (Students attending this session are not required to attend “Meet Your Major” at 11:00am.)

Students who did not check in on Saturday during Welcome Week Check-In should check in with the Peer Leader staff at this time to receive essential information, including a BU bag, nametag, and a Belhaven University t-shirt.

NOTE:  This session is for students that did not attend B & U Day (pre-registration in June for freshmen or July for transfers). 
Students will receive a practical and helpful introduction to the following areas: Registrar’s Office, Student Success, Student Life, Financial Aid, Student Leadership, Information Technology training and more!  Students will also receive instructions for the Meet Your Major session and Academic Advising & Registration.

Students will meet with advisors and Peer Leaders from their respective majors.  This will give students and advisors a chance to visit informally, have an opportunity to ask questions and find out pertinent information needed for advising.  Students with an undecided major are welcome to join any academic area of their interest.

Soccer Bowl
Students are encouraged to meet representatives of various student organizations, clubs, and ministries to learn how to get involved at Belhaven University!  Students should use the BU.org insert in their nametag badge to be entered in a drawing for multiple prizes and giveaways.  Names will be drawn randomly from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.

Athletics Highlight
Soccer Bowl
The men’s soccer team will host an inter-squad scrimmage beginning at 2:00pm in the Soccer Bowl.  The Belhaven University men’s soccer team holds the 2012 National Championship title!  You don’t want to miss the action!  Many of the BU student athletes will be present and the Athletics department will also host the half-time activities.

All new students will meet in their respective Peer Group Huddle Room.  Peer Leaders will guide students during this session.  This is the perfect time for new students to ask Peer Leaders any questions prior to the start of classes.  Also, new students will receive a complimentary meal ticket for Late Night Breakfast.

Students will meet in their respective Peer Huddle Room to hear a brief devotion and get instructions for the service projects.  Peer Leaders will also be available to answer any questions students may have during this time.  A continental breakfast will be served in each Peer Group Huddle Room.

Everyone will depart from their respective Peer Group Huddle Rooms to load buses and go off-campus for the morning!  Peer Groups will serve together at various locations in the Jackson community!  All groups will return to campus by 12:00pm.

On the final day before the start of classes, feel free to spend this time taking care of details such as making sure you have your textbooks for class, locating your classrooms, adding the finishing touches to your room, or making a last minute run to the store.

The mandatory meetings serve as an opportunity for resident students to meet the Residence Hall staff and be informed of important policies and procedures that are in place to help build an environment that is conducive to academic pursuit and personal growth.  This is a mandatory meeting, and there will be a $50.00 fine for those who do not attend.
