Student and Alumni Spotlights for the Dance Program

Mercy Lay, Dance Major

Name: Mercy Lay
Major: Dance
Hometown: Malaysia
Fact: I am a twin, the younger sister. I normally love to wear blue or yellow. Both of us love roller-coasters, and watching funny cartoon movies from Pixar’s and DreamWorks. We never fought in our entire lives. I loved food and cook Chinese food. I normally do the cooking and my sister loves to chop, slice ingredients, and wash-up while I do the cooking.

I chose to come to Belhaven because... of the dance program. It was an answer to prayer how I first heard of Belhaven. My parents attended a wedding dinner and were placed at a table which they knew none of the guests. My mom began to talk to a man beside her and they came to a conversation about his daughter earning a dance degree from Belhaven. My mom was stunned to hear about a Christian school which taught dance, which had been my prayer. Now as a dance major at Belhaven, I love the Christian environment the most.  The university prepares people to serve, not to be served. Being a dance major in Belhaven has been a wonderful journey not only I have grown in my physical, emotional being, but most of all my spiritual growth in God.

One relationship that has meant a lot to me while attending
Belhaven...
are the people around me who manifested God's love to me. I am really thankful for the godly people in Belhaven such as the faculty who are understanding and willing to help in my studies; the staff who are willing to spend time with me through talking and sharing, showing their love, care and concern to me; and friends who are encouraging and helpful to me when I need help.

Because of my degree from Belhaven University... I would like to bless people with what I have learned and share the journey I have experienced while at Belhaven. My mission is to use dance as an evangelical tool to reach out to people and share God's joy, love and goodness. I hope to use dance as a children’s ministry and minister to families too.

One word to describe my experience at Belhaven: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!
