Student and Alumni Spotlights for the Music Program
I chose to come to Belhaven University because... it is one of the few performing arts schools in the country that operates with more than just a nod to the Christian perspective. I was particularly attracted to the dance program, since I was really into ballet in high school, but I ended up coming in as a music major instead.
One relationship that has meant a lot to me while attending Belhaven University…is my relationship with my voice teacher, Dr. Shelt. He constantly pushes me to excel technically and artistically, but he is always willing to put a lesson on hold to mentor me and help me deal with life's difficulties. He allowed me to give input when he was putting together the outline for the musical theatre concentration, which made me feel so honored. Another faculty relationship I feel I need to mention is the one I have with Dr. Hubele in the English Department. He made my day every single class, from Lit 1 to Lit 4, with his verbosity and dry wit. He always tries to find real life lessons we can apply to our lives as students, and I have to say the poems he said would "change our lives" really did... I still think about them. Faculty here really do care about their students on a personal level.
Because of my degree from Belhaven University… I will be equipped for teaching, directing, performing, choreographing, composing, and musical ministry. I'm actually looking at going to Japan with Mission to the World and working with their arts ministries.
One word to describe your experience at Belhaven: Adventurous.
