Student and Alumni Spotlights for the Music Program
I chose to come to Belhaven University because... it just clicked. The music faculty walked into the Center for the Arts where I was waiting for an audition, and it's hard to describe, but I just knew that Belhaven was where I was supposed to be. I knew before I even auditioned or met any of them. It was truly an answer to prayer because I needed that confirmation to come as far away from home as I have.
One relationship that has meant a lot to me while attending Belhaven University is... that of my music theory teacher, Dr. Sauerwein. I started his classes not knowing anything about music theory except that it's a subject most music students dread, and he really transformed that for me. His door was always open for me to ask any question I wanted, and that was one of the most important things I wanted in a college—I wanted to be able to learn as a person, not a number. By my final semester in theory, he asked me (with a twinkle in his eye, I might add) if I was "actually starting to like the stuff!?" I couldn't say no, because he had not only taught me music theory, he had also unlocked a love and respect for that aspect of music.
Because of my degree from Belhaven University… I have the options of performing in various venues, cutting a CD, conducting a choir, teaching private voice lessons, missions work through the arts, and/or teaching music classes. There are so many different fields that need educated musicians—especially churches and volunteer organizations. I never want to stop performing, but because of what I've learned in my music classes, I also feel obligated to give back through teaching. I'd like to be able to prepare students to use the full capacity of their gifts in ways that I wasn't privileged to experience before coming here—and Belhaven has taught me how to do that.
One word to describe your experience at Belhaven: Warm.
