Student and Alumni Spotlights for the Theatre Program

Ethan Polson, Theatre Major

Name: Madison Parrott
Major: Musical Theatre
Hometown: Jackson, Mississippi
Fact: Even though I'm a Musical Theatre performer, I have a major passion for costuming!

I chose to come to Belhaven because... It was extremely important for me to attend a Christian university to study theatre. The world of theatre is overwhelmingly secular, so learning how to maintain my Christian beliefs as an actor without being confined to church theatre was an important issue for me.  Having my classes taught by working Christian actors gave me the opportunity to see the different ways each of these professionals juxtaposes a Christian worldview with a secular profession, and then use what I have learned to find my own way with the Lord in theatre. In addition to the spiritual aspect, Belhaven has an extremely strong Musical Theatre program that could easily overtake secular schools as far as the quality of training provided. It was really the best of both worlds!

One relationship that has meant a lot to me while attending Belhaven...My accompanist is my best friend! We moved in on the same hall my freshman year, and have been friends ever since.

Because of my degree from Belhaven University...I feel prepared to audition for graduate schools. The professors take such a specialized interest in each of the students to make sure we keep honing our crafts that I believe that once my time here is up, I will be more than ready for professional and graduate school auditions. In addition to feeling confident in my theatrical training, I believe that even if I am unable to attend a Christian graduate program, I will feel secure enough in the foundation that has been laid at Belhaven to face secular theatre without compromising my Christian worldview.

One word to describe my experience at Belhaven: Transformative
