(March 27, 2009)–Kansas City, MO–Belhaven College athletes Heather Pace and Craig Westcott were recently selected as Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and NAIA national players of the week for their efforts during the week of March 16th through March 21st. In addition, Pace set an NAIA national record for most RBIs in a game.
Pace, a freshman from Sherman, TX, was named softball player of the week compiling a .650 batting average for the week along with a 1.300 slugging percentage in five games. Pace went 13 for 20 at the plate with two home runs, seven doubles, 18 RBIs and nine runs scored. In Belhaven’s 21-2 victory over William Woods University, Pace set a new NAIA national record for most RBIs in a game–eleven. Head Softball Coach Rick Fremin says of Pace’s national record: “I think Heather has had an exceptional year thus far, not to mention she has accomplished this as a true freshman.”
Westcott, a senior from Chalmette, LA, was named the baseball pitcher of the week after a shut-out game against Loyola University (10-0 in five innings). This was his second consecutive no-hitter. Westcott struck out seven batters in route to a 6-2 record on the season and an ERA of 3.54. Westcott pitched six innings of shut-out baseball against Spring Hill College the weekend before.
The Belhaven baseball team is 25-10 on the season and the Lady Blazer softball team is 25-11 overall. Visit the Belhaven College Athletics website for the latest news and updates on the season.
