December 14, 2009: The Belhaven University men's and women's basketball programs will be hosting the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic this weekend in Rugg Arena. The Blazer men will play Blue Mountain College on Friday at 8:00 PM and Trevecca Nazarene University Saturday at 7:00 PM. The Blazer women will face Talladega College at 6:00 PM Friday and Blue Mountain College on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
The tournament is a two-day event featuring four games on Friday the 18th and four more games on Saturday the 19th. Part of the proceeds of this tournament will go to the American Cancer Society and Coaches vs. Cancer.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The initiative leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. Coaches vs. Cancer provides critical mission outreach, while raising funds in support of the Society's lifesaving cancer research, education, advocacy, and community service efforts.
Friday's games are scheduled for 2, 4, 6, and 8, with Saturday's first contest slated to tipoff at 1 followed by games at 3, 5, and 7. Admission for adults 12 and older is $5, and children under 12 are free. High school basketball teams and youth groups are invited to attend free of charge (must come as a team/group).
