April 29, 2009—Christian missionary, educator and multimedia producer Dr. Doris Brougham will deliver the address at the May Commencement Exercises for Belhaven College on May 9, 2009. The graduation ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson.
Dr. Brougham is known throughout Asia for her 60 years as a missionary and for her continuing impact through Overseas Radio and Television Incorporated (ORTV), a non-profit Christian media organization that she co-founded in 1960. As English began to become more necessary around the world, ORTV developed Studio Classroom in 1962, which has taught English to hundreds of thousands of non-native speakers. Today, ORTV has eleven international broadcasting locations, including Taiwan, the USA, the UK, China, Australia, India and Japan.
For her dedication and service to the people of Asia, Dr. Brougham has been honored with many awards, including the Golden Bell Award in Educational Radio Programs and the Order of the Brilliant Star with Violet Grand Cordon, which is the highest non-military decoration in Taiwan. ORTV has also received international praise and recognition for the impact it has made across the world.
As Belhaven College continues to expand internationally through exchange programs, the International Studies major, and the arts partnership with Dong-Ah Institute of Media and Arts (DIMA) in Korea, Dr. Brougham brings a message of Christian education that resonates with the core of the Belhaven College mission: to prepare students academically and spiritually to serve Christ Jesus in their careers, in human relationships, and in the world of ideas—on any continent.
