On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Belhaven College students, faculty, and staff will gather for a yearly tradition that reaches beyond the campus in order to serve the Jackson community. This campus-wide service day involves working hand in hand with community members to provide help with projects around the city. Participants will work with organizations and ministries such as Gateway Rescue Mission, Center for Pregnancy Choices, The Little Light House, the John Perkins Foundation, Mission First, and the Greater Belhaven Neighborhood Association.
With projects ranging from landscaping to picking up litter, the day is always a good reminder of Belhaven’s motto: “to serve, not to be served” (Matthew 20:28). Jerry Zifodya, Belhaven senior and Community Outreach Coordinator, says that the MLK Service Day provides “an opportunity to get out of our ‘college bubble’ and give back to the greater Jackson community.”
