February 3, 2011: Belhaven University’s Theatre Department presents "The Three Sisters," a play by Anton Chekhov. It will be performed February 17-19 and 23-26 at 7:30 pm, in the Blackbox Theatre with Saturday Matinees on February 19 and 26 at 2:00 pm.
"I think it’s a wonderful play in that it defines what people have called a difficult play - it cannot be classified as either comedy or tragedy," said the Director, John Maxwell. "There is a sense of hope and also a sense of loss. It’s a play you can’t really define. It’s about the human condition."
Caught between the longing for the past and a hope for the future, the siblings of the Prozorof family struggle to find their place after the passing of their father; their desire to return to Moscow opposed by the obligations of the present. John Maxwell, a faculty member, will be directing this "tragicomedy." General admission is $10 and Seniors, Students, and Children admission is $5. There is complimentary admission for Belhaven faculty, staff, students and immediate families. The doors open at 7:00. There will be an opening night reception following the performance on February 17.
