April 15, 2015 (Jackson) - The annual Belhaven Theatre Festival begins next week and each day of the week will offer theatrical events from featured guest artists, student-initiated performances, staged readings and senior recitals to class showcases, workshops and presentations.
"The Theatre Festival gives our students a chance to propose, produce and perform projects that just don't fit into our regular season, said Dr. Elizabeth Sartwell, Chair of Theatre Department. It's a celebration of bare-bones, community-generated theatre akin to that produced in the Federal Theatre Project back in the 30's. It's not about big sets or complex costumes. It's about trying new things, telling stories simply, and putting to the test the theories and techniques learned in the classroom."
