November 10, 2017 (Jackson, Miss.) - Belhaven University now offers a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Leadership and Supervision and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in Educational Leadership. Both programs are designed for professional educators in Mississippi K-12 schools who want to advance in school leadership and/or become school administrators.
The program, which meets the Mississippi's K-12 licensure guidelines, allows students to study both theory and practice of school administration from a Christian worldview.
Classroom teachers interested in the program are required by the Mississippi Department of Education to have three years of teaching experience before applying. The program's curriculum addresses the National Policy Board of Educational Administration Standards.
Upon completion of these two degree programs, students are prepared to take the School Leaders License Assessment Exam (SLLA). Upon passing the SLLA, the Belhaven University School of Education will recommend candidates for the Mississippi Administrator's License.
“Graduates from the MED program find that they are sought after by school districts because of their knowledge base, skill level, professional disposition, leadership abilities, and the quality of their character,” said Dr. David Hand, dean of Belhaven's School of Education.
All faculty members hold doctoral degrees and have been or are currently serving as school administrators, superintendents, principals/assistant principals and/or in other school leadership positions. Dr. Hand adds, “Faculty share strategies on how to apply wisdom in leadership as a Christian professional educator while serving in public and private school environments.”
The program was designed to be user-friendly for professionals who currently work in schools and have family obligations. Courses are all taught online with individual one on one assistance available. Each course lasts eight weeks, which allows for the entire degree program to be completed in as little as two years.
