March 24, 2017 (Jackson, Miss.) - Alumna and violinist Shellie Brown '12 will return to the Belhaven stage on March 28 as part of the Preston Chamber Music Series: An Evening of Diamonds II. This free concert from Belhaven's Music Department is open to the public and will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall. Brown will perform Sonata for Violin and Piano in G minor by Claude Debussy as well as Piano Trio in A Minor by Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
While at Belhaven, she perfected her artistry under the expertise and guidance of Mr. Song Xie, professor of music. Upon graduating from Belhaven, Brown received a contract with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra as a core section violinist. She is currently studying with Paul Kantor at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.
Brown is a violinist from Jackson, Mississippi pursuing her master's degree at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. She grew up studying with various violin and fiddle teachers of the Jackson area and Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. She has attended and performed at a variety of music festivals in the U.S., including Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory, The Masterworks Festival, The Aspen Music Festival and School, and the Summer Music Institute at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. which she attended as a recipient of a National Trustee's Fellowship.
She is also the recipient of a generous grant from Performing Arts Consortium of Hilton Head. She is the first place winner of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, a finalist in the Coeur d'Alene Symphony Concerto Competition and received honorable mention at the MTNA 2014 and 2016 Southern Division competitions in Kentucky and Florida.
