Belhaven Senior Dance Concert Debuts Original Choreography

February 21, 2025 (Jackson, Miss.) - Belhaven’s Senior Dance Concert is February 28 and March 1. This compelling showcase of original choreography was created by senior dance majors. The event, sponsored by DOXA, is a culmination of the dancers’ academic endeavors and creative pursuits, capturing the vibrant spirit of Belhaven University. This unique event contributes to Jackson’s rich cultural tapestry and welcomes art enthusiasts to witness the students’ artistic journey.

“The Senior Dance Concert will showcase choreographic works by seniors exploring the practice of choreography as research,” said Clara Grace Watts, associate professor of dance and senior project advisor. “Some research topics include how the study of martial arts can inform concert dance’s embodiment of conflict, the collaborative communication between composers and choreographers, and how small group ministry dynamics can enhance the community of creation. The concert will also feature seniors performing solos that engage in practice as research, exploring topics such as the transformational power of corporeal history.”

Performances are at 7 p.m. at the Bitsy Irby Visual Arts and Dance Center Studio Theatre. Doors will open to the public at 6:30 p.m., inviting audiences to experience an evening of innovative dance.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for general admission, with a discounted rate of $5 for seniors and students. Belhaven University offers complimentary admission for its faculty, staff, students, and their immediate families. Reservations can be made by emailing dancetickets@belhaven.edu.
