Art and Design Department Honored with Prestigious 2024 MAEA Prism Award

December 3, 2024 (Jackson, Miss.) - The Mississippi Art Education Association (MAEA) has awarded the 2024 Prism Award to the Belhaven University Art + Design Department, recognizing its outstanding contributions to art education in Mississippi. Presented at the MAEA Fall Conference on November 15 in Jackson, Miss., this prestigious accolade celebrates organizations outside the association’s membership that make significant strides in promoting and supporting art education.

Professor and Co-Chair of Art+Design Department Nate Theisen said, “We have made a concerted effort to connect with and support schools and other educational institutions that promote emerging artists. This award signifies our dedication to supporting the arts in our community and empowering future generations of artists. We are proud to contribute to the vibrant creative landscape of Mississippi.”

The University joins a short list of institutions that have received this award from the MAEA, which is the leading professional arts education organization representing the state.

MAEA President Renna Moore-Edwards described the award as one of the highest honors given by the organization. “The Prism Award recognizes organizations and individuals who go to great strides to promote art education in our state. We are honored to present this award to the Belhaven University Art + Design Department and their amazing art professors who have added so much to art and education in the state.”

Over the past several years, Belhaven’s Art + Design Department has built a legacy of support for schools and educators through initiatives such as hosting the MAEA Annual Conference, organizing the Emerging Artist Exhibition for high school artists, leading workshops for the National Arts Honors Society’s All-Star Art Challenge, and engaging the homeschool community with specialized programs. Additionally, the department regularly welcomes art students from area schools for workshops and seminars, enriching the artistic development of young learners across Mississippi.

Founded in 1938, the MAEA is a professional organization devoted to championing the necessity of art in education. Through its programs, resources, and advocacy, the association equips educators to foster creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in students.
