There’s a lot you can do to prepare for your career while still in college. Use this year-by-year checklist as a guide and be sure to stop by the Center for Career & Calling for advice, resources, and more.
Let’s Go: Career Prep Advice By Year
- Take classes that interest you
- Explore majors by talking to professors and upperclassmen
- Decide what you want from college, both short- and long-term
- Develop great study habits
- Get to know Handshake
- Seek academic help as needed
- Move toward clarity about your career goals — see what work you enjoy, how your goals shift, what new careers you hear about
- Make friends and get involved on campus
- Use Handshake to find opportunities (career-related internships, volunteer roles, and other part-time positions)
- Keep an eye on your GPA; you’ll be glad you did!
- Meet with Center for Career & Calling staff to confirm your long-term goals
- Register on Handshake
- Attend a resume workshop
- Create a resume draft and upload it to Handshake
- Complete a mock job interview
- Complete an internship
- Attend the Belhaven Career Fair
- Meet with your advisor to make sure you’re on track for graduation
- Look for ways to get involved in leadership on campus
- If you’re planning to attend graduate school, look up the required entrance test and take a practice version
- Keep an eye on your GPA
- Meet with Center for Career & Calling staff to set firm steps to meet your goals
- Apply for graduation
- Attend a resume workshop to refine your resume; upload it to Handshake
- Complete a mock job interview
- Attend the Belhaven Career Fair
- Attend a Governor’s Job Fair
- If you’re planning to attend graduate school, look up the required entrance test and take a practice version
- Keep an eye on your GPA
