Ben Laws

"My continuous line pieces began with a lingering interest in the doodles my father left around the house while on phone calls, and evolved as I began to explore the potential behind one (or two) line's journey across a surface. They explore themes of gestalt, hyper focus and motivated perception – merging my interest in generative forms and fine detail."

Ben Laws. 2023

"In the Belhaven Visual Arts department I have learned how to ‘see’ art—not just looking at it, but noticing all the technical details, engaging with a piece mentally and emotionally, understanding why a piece makes me feel a certain way, and having some idea of the artist’s intentions. Now I understand how to see and feel art."

Aza Raye

"I came to Belhaven to learn more about he artistic process and develop the skills necessary for an illustrator. Although drawing is still a major part of my artistic process, I have become immersed in traditional darkroom photography. Film allows me to capture my love of decay and the way it expresses the effects of time and nature. Through photography, I strive to bring life and presence back to locations that echo with memories long forgotten."

Elaina Smith

"I grew up with a love for art. After arriving at Belhaven, I focused on honing my skills as a painter and tattoo artist. I have started freelancing my work and hope to continue to do so after graduation."

Haley Franklin

"I explore my love of nature through both photography and painting. My photographs focus on capturing the hidden and sometimes overlooked features of life. I also paint landscapes and mixed media collages incorporating organic and industrial materials found in every day life."

Exhibitions are an important and exciting aspect of the arts at Belhaven. As a Tradigital Studies major, you learn the professional practice of exhibitions. Curate, prepare, and install your work so you can share your voice through your art.

Explore the minds and work of other incredible artists. Belhaven brings guest artists to our performing and visual arts centers each semester.

Guest artists enhance your learning experience by sharing their experiences and perspectives. You’ll gain insight on building a successful career as a creative, and you’ll feel inspired through viewing original works and performances.
